Recently I posted a triplog/photoset about a visit to Las Vegas, New Mexico in August 2018. I included a photo of a sign in town of the Gallinas River Park. This prompted Elizabeth @azbackpackr to ask me about the river. The parts I have seen mostly had been up toward Hermit Peak and in town. But on my trip over to that area in 2014, I got a tip from a photographer while at the Cleveland Roller Mill festival near Mora. He told me about a very scenic drive along the river south and southeast of Las Vegas, that culminated at the site of an old ghost town. So, as I was starting my journey back home, I checked this out and it turned out to be a very enjoyable long day! I have already posted triplogs/photosets for the roller mill and Blue Hole (Santa Rosa) from this trip, so this completes the Gallinas River portion.

The regional streams that head southeast from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the area (Tecolote and Gallinas) eventually flow out into the plains before emptying into the Pecos River before it reaches Santa Rosa. The drive along county road C24 (which is accessed from the frontage road along I-25 just north of the turnoff for US84) basically follows the river all the way to the ghost town of La Liendre. There are old Hispano settlements along the way dating back to the early to mid 1840s land grant era. Like much of New Mexico, the history has roots all the way back to the ancient trading routes between Mexico City and Santa Fe (Camino Real). Some of the history of this region is documented in a book entitled, "We Fed Them Cactus" by Fabiola Cabeza de Baca. She spent some time growing up on a family ranch at La Liendre and later was a school teacher in this rural area.
