| no partners | | Down to Madera Canyon for a hike and to check out the HAZ Tracks app on my Android phone. Also recorded the route on my Garmin Oregon 450. I was impressed with the app, and it was more accurate than the Oregon on this test. That is because of the settings I used on the Garmin. I will continue testing them together on future hikes for awhile. I will change the Garmin settings to see if I can get them in better agreement. And next time the phone will be in airplane mode so I don't run out of battery power like I did today, just .3 mile from the end of the hike.
This hike was on trail except for near the end, when I bushwhacked off the Super Trail where it comes around the hill past the turnoff to Rogers Rock. I figured I could cut off some of that backtrack distance it does before dropping to the creek. I followed what appears to be an old firebreak (probably from the 2005 fire) that ran steeply downhill from the Super Trail to the Pipeline. Got a little tough just before I reached the Pipeline Trail. It did shave about a mile off the hike, but it really wasn't worth the extra effort.
Encountered two small rattlesnakes on the hike, both Rock Rattlers I think. One was very juvenile, perhaps 6 to 7 inches long, and somewhat uncoordinated yet. Neverthless, he took the classic defensive/strike pose. Such a joy with the microscopic rattles! The second one was much more mature.
Update: gummo says it is an Arizona Ridge-nosed Rattlesnake...that's even better!
I rarely hike the Vault Mine or Agua Caliente Trails, so it was nice to see those sections again. |
