| partners | | The plan for this day hike was to follow ssk44's route along the rim of The Rincon from his Dec. 2010 trip. We didn't expect to be able to do the full route but hoped to get as far as the F-100F military aircraft crash site (see the linked guide and ssk44's triplog). GH and I met rwstorm at the HW177 turnoff on Battle Axe Road and started the drive to the trailhead. The last few miles where the road circles around the north side of Battle Axe Butte were very rough high clearance 4x4 and we were glad to have two 4x4 vehicles in case one broke down. At the trailhead Randy decided to opt out of the rim hike and do some less physically challenging explorations on his own.
The hike was all off-trail. Over the first 1.5 miles it was fairly easy to find our way around and between bushes and other prickly stuff. But the grapefruit sized rocks littering the ground were an ankle twisting foot bruising nuisance. The consolation was the amazing views as we hiked along the rim. After about 1.2 miles the rim becomes a narrow spine with cliff sided peaks and pinnacles that make it necessary to traverse along either the south or north side. After visually checking both sides we chose to go on the north side but after another 0.3 miles the slope we were traversing got very steep and covered with brush which slowed our progress and used up a lot of energy. High rock outcroppings blocked the views of the route ahead and resulted in dithering back and forth while we did some route finding. We finally decided to climb up to a saddle with views of both sides of the ridge and take a lunch break. At this point we discovered that the south side of the ridge would be an easier route to continue the hike as well as for the return route. After considerable procrastination over lunch while enjoying the views and assessing our remaining energy and time we decided to head back. We would not make it to the F-100F crash site which was about another 0.5 miles across some rugged ground. |
