This was another hike out of Camp Grasshopper-Redman Mesa on the fourth day of our camping trip. It would be a solo hike. GH took the day off due to possible rain but also to rest up for a couple more days of hiking and just because he likes to fuss around camp. We had hiked to these falls on a previous camping trip in Nov 2018 but had driven on a rough 4x4 road for several miles to reach a starting point for the hike. With our discovery of the ranching trail off the west side of Redman Mesa we now had a way to access this area from our camp that would be about the same hiking distance but without the rough 4x4 drive. As you can see from the hiking distance, this new route made for a short hike.

We had seen from a high viewpoint the day before that Turkey Creek had enough water flowing to put on a display at the falls so it was worth a return trip. The falls only had a trickle of water when we were there in Nov. The ranch trail made for a fairly easy hike down to the old 4x4 road that leads to Turkey Creek near the falls. There had been considerable clearing of brush and trees along the trail by someone handy with a chainsaw within the last year. The discovery of an old faded pull tab beer can along the trail indicated the trail had been in use for at least 35 years. (That type of pull tab was discontinued in 1983) The remains of an old fence gate laying beside the trail was also evidence that the trail had been in use for a long time. We had thought that maybe the trail led to a mining claim. However the trails's purpose as a ranching trail become even more evident when I encountered two 50 pound salt blocks by the trail about half way down the hillside surrounded by fresh cattle hoof prints. An ATV had been used to haul in the blocks from the 4x4 road where the trail ends.

After viewing the falls I backtracked to camp knowing that we would be using this trail again the next day to check out some viewpoints at the confluence of Turkey Creek, Indian Camp Cny and JR Cny with Salome Creek.
