Based on looking at Google Earth and an old topo map there appeared to have been an old pack trail or road at one time that took a shortcut from FR609 across the north west part of Redman Mesa towards where we were camped. There was also an earth tank visible on GE along this route that was not shown on any of the maps I have access to. So the area appeared worthy of exploration. There were trails leading through thickets of scrub oak and manzanita on this route, portions of which followed the location of the road or trail shown on my old Garmin 24k US Southwest Topo map. Mostly these were animal or cow trails which may have by coincidence coincided with the trail shown on the Garmin map. The tank had some water in it but is probably dry most of the year.
This shortcut route to FR609 would have made a better route to Redman Mesa with less AEG than the current route so may have been the route used by early ranchers. The route passed through forests of Alligator Juniper, oak and pine trees which mostly obscured any long distance views so I took few photographs. I hiked all the way to FR609 and then made a lollipop loop out of the hike by hiking down a drainage to the west and then following another drainage back to my incoming track. The area enclosed by this loop had a much higher proportion of pine trees compared to that of the juniper and oak trees. There was evidence that this area had been logged for the pine some time ago which probably accounted for several spur roads off of FR486 into this area. These spur roads now make for good secluded camping spots.
It turned out to be a pleasant stroll through the woods with only minor bushwhacking, a good choice for arrival day and avoiding getting involved with the laborious setup of Camp GH. |
