I really like Jacks Canyon after some exploratory hikes in it last year and figured record snow would fill it up with nice amounts of water.
It always retains decent pools but now some of them were big and deep enough to swim in with light flow everywhere bringing to life the usually dry cascades and wide sections.
I encountered a wounded bull elk down here last year in his final moments, came back a week later to find him dead, marked his location and waited until now for natural decomposition to take place but just as I figured his body was swept apparently over a mile downstream along with the mass amounts of huge timber and debris from a recent flash flood and I only ended up finding bits and pieces of him, a leg here, a leg there.
Crossed over the canyon up to the west side and soon got on InciWeb to check for control burns in the area because all I could smell and see was smoke which I found odd since the only burns listed were out by Sitgreaves Mountain and in the city of Flagstaff.
Hiked around the rim more and spotted some intriguing formations in the rock and almost thought caves but only found divots, although I do have a feeling there’s something in the vicinity.
Payton came up with the find of the day as whenever her nose hits the ground I follow and this time she led us to a sweet little fresh raghorn bull deadhead to cap off the evening and a great day in the woods. |
