| no partners | | Wanted to spot the Elegant Trogon on this trip. We mapped out a loop Starting with the Old Baldy trail, then jumping onto the Agua Caliente Trail and finishing up on the Vault Mine Trail.
Madera Canyon is well known for it's birding, and hiking up the Old Baldy Trail you could hear a ton of birds everywhere including the Trogon all up and down the canyon... But we did not see the Trogon at this point.
I prefer desert hiking, but as far as higher elevation hiking with the trees and all, this is one of the better hikes I have been on. In addition to the variety of birds, views were great when available, the trail is well maintained and easy to follow, intersections are well marked.
Finally within the last 1/2 mile of our hike we were able to spot the Trogon and get some pretty good photos.
This is a great area, and I plan on coming back for more as the temperatures rise in the valley. |
