Came up to the rim For a weekend hiking/camping trip. Was surprised at the amount of people camping on fr 40f and fr 91 but eventually we found a really nice spot away from the crowds. Saturday evening we did a short hike to the Gentry Spring area again. The few seeps in the meadow still had water, but downstream in Gentry Canyon was dry . Monsoons are suppose to start firing up this week so that’s good. Anyway we retrieved a game camera from a side canyon close to Gentry Spring and it provided awesome entertainment next to the fire that evening. Had hundreds of pictures and videos of elk, baby elk, deer, coyotes, and even a sweet video of a mountain lion! Oh and a not so shabby video of a bear licking the camera! We are not hunters but cool to see what kind of wildlife roam in the areas we love to hike.
Next morning since we were camped just off Turkey Canyon we had to drop in there and check that out. Was last there about 4-5 years ago and it was my favorite canyon I’ve ever been too. Safe to say it still hasn’t changed. And this time I was able to show my wife and 2 dogs. The sweeping meadows and at times steep canyon walls are breathtaking. There was good water for a while but eventually started to dry out and tighten up and that’s when we climbed out. Found an elk shed and then dropped into open draw and explored that a little. Dry but beautiful. Looped back to camp and called it a day. Wildlife of the weekend consisted of turkeys (of course) and a lone coyote. Good times And good weather up on the beautiful Mogollon Rim.
Btw the route included is of our hike Sunday morning involving Turkey Canyon and open draw.
