It had been my first hike in the AZ desert when my wife and I first started coming to AZ for the winter in 2010. I remember being amazed with the dense desert foliage. My curiosity about those pretty yellowish-green puff balls littering the trail led to a learning moment for what I would later find out were called Teddy Bear Cholla. I picked one up to get a closer look and soon had both hands stuck together followed by a very painful experience separating my hands from this puff ball. I have passed that lesson learned down to my grandchildren.
It was a beautiful sunny day with temps in the low 60s. We stopped for a noon time snack at the halfway point. A couple of hikers overheard me offering the kids some of Grandma's Christmas Fudge. Thought for a minute we might get mugged by those two for the fudge. But it turned out to be the starting point for some friendly conversation even though we weren't willing to share what was the last of the fudge. |
