This loop is actually 3 interconnected loops, The Perseverance Loop, One-Mile Loop, and Sparrow Nest Loop. The Sparrow Nest loop has some of the nicest areas with plentiful ferns, but is also the hardest to follow. All trails are marked by blue markers with white arrows on the trees, but at the southwest-most section, the trail is pretty much non-existent, especially given the overgrowth. The only way to make it is to follow the blue markers, which there never seems to be enough of. Add to this having no GPS signal due to the intense tree cover, and this hike can be quite a challenge. During this part, I became very aware that you never see cairns in PA like you do in AZ. Once you make it back to the One Mile Loop, everything is again easy to follow. The shade and the mushrooms were very plentiful, and something you won't see much of living in the desert in the summer. |
