| partners | | We got an early start on this hike right on the dot at 7am. Nice views of the Mazatzals to the west. The trail was easy to follow until the last wash where it faded away into shoulder height catclaw. During our detour around this, we found a deer stand and a bee's nest. After getting tired of the catclaw, a near vertical climb up to a ridge adjacent to the wash put us back on the trail again. We turned around where the Half Moon Trail meets the Rock Creek Trail and FR442, which doesn't look much different than the trails. On the way back, the detour thru the catclaw wash wasn't much better. I got separated from the group trying to find my own way and ended up getting up out of the wash and on the mesa, where the catclaw was only knee high. Seeing as how I had my gaiters on this time, I bushwhacked my way over to the trail, which the backtracking feature on my GPS helped me find. After that, it was a smooth jaunt back to the car. Temps seemed somewhat cooler than Phoenix, but I still went thru 200 oz of water. |
