| partners | | Cold, rainy, foggy morning, so we decided to do something short. Drove over to the town of Wallace, then up to Moon Pass. 48 degrees at the start. I was only able to find vague info for this hike, and limited visibility due to the fog made it difficult at times to choose the correct direction. After some trial and error, we headed uphill, doing a little more offtrail than necessary. Once on the correct path, it was much easier.
We headed up St Joe Divide Trail southwest towards Moon Peak. Very pretty trail, and I’d like to hike more of it next summer. After a mile, we turned off and headed west up the slope to Moon Peak. Reasonably easy off trail, but I was glad I’d drawn a route ahead of time, since it ended up being very close to the easiest way up. We mostly followed game trails, and it was easy to get around any vegetation.
The summit is obvious, and clear of trees, so there would have been some views on a clear day. We rested for a few minutes, but temps were considerably cooler (around 40 ?) so we headed back down. Much easier taking the trail back down now that we knew where it was. At one point, we doubted an odd turn in the trail, and doubled back a little, but the turn was correct, so we wasted some time there. Fun hike, and we’ll explore more of it again. 46 degrees when we finished around lunchtime.
The road was dirt, but in excellent shape all the way up to Moon Pass. Didn’t have cell service any of the few times I checked my phone. |
