Rather than taking the official trail, we drove up the road another couple of miles, above Mud Lake, then parked to take a higher route east. This is the same trail we used to finish out our loop last year, and we all enjoyed this ridge.
The trail starts out above timberline and heads east. The first half mile is an old road, and when that ends, the trail continues east. After about a mile, we meandered a bit, looking over the edges for mountain goats. Sure enough, we spotted about 30 of them napping below us. After that, we headed south towards Delano. There is a trail, faint at times, a few cairns, but route finding is obvious, allowing the kids to run around a bit while still heading in the right direction. We curled around the east end of Delano to reach the summit.
After a snack break, we headed down the same way. Again, we wandered around looking for goats. Apparently, we bothered two hipsters who were trying to direct us back to the “trail”. I told him we’d been here before and knew where we were going. He was all upset that we might spook the goats, which we weren’t even near, and I answered with a “So?” He got even more upset, I think the Trump hat one of us in the group was wearing melted his snowflake heart, and they left quickly.
From there, it was an easy mile back to the car. Scenery in the Tushar Mtns is spectacular, so I think we’ll be back next summer for more exploration. |
