Montoya Tank.
This year my goal has been to find and visit 50 tanks.
I’m over halfway there!
Montoya tank was the goal Tuesday.
This is on the North side of Thumb Butte down in the canyon.
If there is an option that involves not taking a path I’ll usually chose that.
Tuesday I made a B-line to the saddle above the tank and then dropped down the other side in a mostly straight line.
There were some chances to rock hop enough shade.
At the saddle the gate was in great shape and it was easy enough to open and close.
-
When I got to the bottom of the canyon I stepped through some frog grass and didn’t see the tank so I headed East for about 10 minutes and still no tank.
Stopped and had a break in the shade and looked at my map and wasn’t sure what happened.
On the way back I discovered that the frog grass was right below the tank wall. Duh.
-
The trip back was much easier and faster as I found a well-used path that took me right to the gate at the saddle.
IF I had opened the other side of the gate I would have seen the path when I crossed. This time I welcomed a path because I got a late start and it was pretty warm by noon thirty.
-
The trail continued back down in the canyon by rte 39 and it was actually a pretty gentle way down.
Along the was there were 4-5 different campsites with bed rolls and clothes and books, etc.
About a quarter mile from the truck I found a cache of water set out by good Samaritans. (white bottles)
I also stumbled across some black bottles of water also. There were better hidden that the white ones.
-
The tanks is nearly filled in – no water
There is a spring in the wash above the tank and there were small pools of water and LOTS of bees.
I brought one small piece of crystals. Perfectly clear. Tiny. I wrapped these in tissue and put them in my pill box to get them home in one piece. I’ll post a pic of those when I get them back.
This could have easily been an hour long hike there and back but there were way too may distractions to explore so it turned into 2.5 hours. |
