This might constitute a hike because I covered 2+ miles find the edge of the Agate field.

I took a trip to the Blackhills Rockhounding area this weekend. Since it’s well advertised online I wont bother with a travel log other than the road condition.
The last 1.5 miles is on a dirt/rock road which is passable by most passenger cars. The few places that had rocks or small washes would be easily negotiated.
-
Cloudy day kept the temperature in the low 80’s which was nice because there is no shade. None. Nada.
-
If you take a passenger car I suggest parking near the register as the road gets worse.
You can’t take a step in any direction without stepping on small pieces of reds or fire agates or the chalcedony. I spoke with someone at the BLM office and she said that anything past the sign was fair game. There is no fence or boundary markers that I could find. I walked in two directions to see if I could find where the agate field ended. Seems like the wash is the end. I went across the wash and up the hill on the other side and didn’t fine much of anything.

Apparently digging is allowed. I dug a few holes and didn’t fare as well as looking on the surface.
The ground is very hard and rocky. I figured if I dug too hard I might break more than I found.
Take water. There are no services here.
We saw only one other couple the whole time and we were there about 3 hours.
We came back with a dozen marble sized fire agate and half a dozen pieces about the size 2x2”.

There is a 25 lb limit.
There is no Fee.
