This was a tough one.
Me and my gal planned to hike Ramanote Peak today. We made it over half way and decided to save it for another day.
We parked just West of Toruno tank. For those of you who are familiar with this place you know about the overturned truck.
The hike down this road is steep. Insanely steep. Maybe a Razor could make it there. In the sand at the bottom were horse tracks.
At the dam we headed up toward the red cliffs. There are several ways through these and we chose the opening in the cliffs to the right of a big triangle rock. The rock this way was really solid and no slipping was experienced. A slip here would be disastrous.
At the top of the red cliffs we found a hollow in a rock that made a double window. I would say the inside was 3x4 feet.. Its like a hollow pumpkin with holes on either side.
-
Lunch at the high point above the red cliffs. The view of Ramanote canyon was spectacular. There is a lot to explore on the South side of the canyon.
-
We decided to not go to the peak because we got started 3 hours later than planned.
Instead we chose a side trip to the North and headed down another canyon.
This was.... wow... beautiful and scary.
-
The red cliffs close in and the canyon gets as small as 12 feet wide.
there are lots of cliffs to climb down. Some were easy to find a way through the boulders or rough rock. We found that some could be bypassed by clinging to the canyon wall.
Four of these nearly sent us back the way we came.
-
The first big one was at least 40 feet tall. We clung to the side of the canyon wall and inched our way down.
The second one was a good 20-25 feet tall. We jammed our walking sticks in cracks and used them as steps down the canyon wall.
We both blocked the third one from our memory forever so it must have been bad.
The last one was about 20 feet tall and the rocks were worn smooth and slippery. Hand and foot holds were small.
I managed to jump from one flat spot to the next and slide down then used my stick as steps for my lady to get down.
-
A few hundred yards from here was the beginning of a cow path that lead us back to Ramanote canyon. We decided to head up out of the canyon in a straight line to the overturned truck instead of hiking a quarter mile to the road near the dam.
-
We found several camps made by illegals. I think if someone can make it from Mexico to this point we should welcome them to our country with open arms and start training them for an Olympic team of their choice.
-
The only water along the way was in small pots in the rocks.
This is the same canyon as my 12-23 hike and about 3 miles from the unexpected packages.
