Stephanie is planning on a trail race in April having never done a trail run before, so I found a pretty short segment on what I hoped was easy terrain where we could park at each end. We started at the Iron Springs Railroad TH, crossed Iron Springs Road to get on Javelina trail #332 I have done Javelina Trail going the other direction before and it was very well maintained, the same went for this direction. It was fairly mild climbing and descending for the duration, pretty good for a first trail run. There was still some snow in shaded sections from the snow we got Thanksgiving night. After 2.1 miles you cross Granite Basin Rd, which is lightly trafficked, then you come to a well secured water tank. Another .8 miles and you will pass two trails going off to the left, there are enough trails over here to keep a person busy a long time. Shortly after those intersections, there's a fork. To the right is a somewhat shorter route to Granite Basin/Katahn Dr parking area (only room for a few cars, but not very busy), to the left is the Circle Trail route that I think has more climbing involved. This section has some loose rock, not bad, but we walked it... along with most of the uphills . Throughout, you get great views of Prescott and Granite Mountain. |
