| no partners | | I had big plans to do the Carney Springs/Dacite Mesa/Cave Trail loop, but when I arrived at the Peralta Trailhead, I opted to head up Peralta Trail and then up to Robbers Roost.
The sunrise was really nice on the way up. I kept turning around to take pictures. The cool clouds extend pretty far to the west as well.
I made it to the Fremont Saddle and started up. This area was burnt up from the fire, but it stopped once I got on the trail (thankfully). About half way up, I saw some cairns going up to the spires and I opted to follow it. At first I thought it was some sort of sucker trail, but it kept going. Very cool little area. Once I came to the top, I could see the mesa below. I am not sure if this is faster/shorter, but it was a cool little route. It puts you on the mesa right at the Chimney Rock formation.
I wanted to explore the mesa, so I started heading south. I made it to the edge of the mesa and got a great view of the Carney Springs trail and the Three Sisters/Peak 5057. I was climbing back up and I thought I could find an alternative route to Robbers Roost. The offical gps trail shows a way to get there, but I kept cliffing out or running into unpassable spots. My short cut turned into a long cut. Oh well, I went back up the way I know. Robbers Roost was cool as always. I took the mandatory pictures and started back.
All of the cairns going to Robbers Roost have been removed/knocked down, but I came across a family heading down there when I was leaving. I also came across 3 other parties going up when I was heading down.
I saw some "doable" paths coming down from the ridge when I was heading up the Peralta Trail. I thought I would look for an alternative route down as well. But, I kept cliffing out or getting to "too steep for me" spots. So, I just went back to the trail and went to Fremont Saddle. I stopped and had my lunch.
Saddling up, I should have gone down the Cave Trail, but I was already sore from my bushwhacking adventures up top, so I went down the same way as I went up - Peralta Trail. I now remember why I stay off this trail when the sun is out this time of year. It was packed. A steady stream going up and down. Next time, lesson learned.
A great day in an even greater location. Tis' a privilege to live near these mountains. That is for sure. |
