Pleasant temps to start. The first two miles are pretty easy—rocky in a few places, and some locust encroaching on the trail, but still quite pleasant. The next half mile is all the adventure. It’s a tedious climb up the chute, but made easier with JJ pointing out the best way to go in several places. He did throw one cactus at me in the middle of the chute. Once at the top, there was a nice breeze, but lots of flying insects. We rested for a while before heading back down. Again, a tedious half mile, but we all survived without incident. The Salewa Mountain Trainer Lites were great shoes for this one, no slipping on any rocks. Once back on the trail, it had warmed up, but was an easy hike back downhill to the trailhead.
Drive in was empty, saw a handful of vehicles on the drive back out. The road is generally in okay shape, with some rough stretches, medium clearance should suffice. 2wd fine when dry. Saw one other hiker on the way up, and maybe ten on the way down. Less fire damage than I was expecting to see, which was a nice surprise. Great day and hike and good to see JJ & Denny again! |

Wildflowers Observation Light Good variety of flowers along the trail for the lower two miles. |
