Able to park beside the wooden planked bridge having gotten permission from the property owner, the bridge is “guarded” by two large , I’m told 300yo , Sycamore trees. Nice and cool with temps in the mid 60’s, counting the out and back trip crossed from West Virginia to Virginia a number of times in this short hike, but the only official state signage is at the crossing of US route 220. Sounds like it should be a major thoroughfare but little traffic most local between Franklin WV and Monterey, Va. The River was running high so the swimming hole would be the drowning hole today with the swirling water, also the River was visible from further away than usual. Took one of the gravel roads up to the junction with Eagles Nest Rd. doubtful the name came from an actual Eagles nest though have seen them in the area. Unfortunately the ditch clearing fairy didn’t pass by while I was hiking today. |
