Very pleasant temps in the early am and with the shadow of the mountain present most of the hike. After passing by two young ladies on the way to the pools saw no one else on the trail nor in the area of the “pools” until returning, the largest pool had a little stagnant water. Was surprised to meet another hiker off trail who was on the way down from balanced rock he warned me the “trail” disappeared on him above where we met, we both agreed that crossing the rock slide section was sketchy as even some of the large boulders would move a bit and throw you off balance. It is a bit disorienting moving among the boulders below the balancing rock because you’ve lost sight of it until scrambling up on its ridge, I liked the way I chose today. Nice views back down the canyon from here. For the return backtracked only a short ways then headed north descending down to rejoin the use route for the ridgeline higher up Hieroglyphic Canyon than where I left it. Thought I was mostly following a game trail but about half way down I found out differently upon coming across a couple of cairns. Met several hikers coming up from the parking lot plus a lot of bike riders unloading their bikes there when finishing up , good to be on time to start early Mother’s Day festivities. |
