| no partners | | Richard Webb invited the lovely Missus and I on a road trip down to Redington Pass to hunt for barrel cacti blooms. It looks like we arrived too soon for the peak. I'd give this area another week or two and it will be amazing. Still managed to find a bunch, but usually with 1-3 blooms, all loaded up with buds and almost ready bloom.
We drove in from the east via San Manual. The area was so green and lush. The ocotillo were fat and happy. You can tell they have been soaked this summer down in this part of Southern AZ.
We basically drove down the road and stopped at promising locations and wandered into the desert look. The top of the pass is grassy with trees. The further west to go, it transitions into beautiful Tucson high desert. The area from the Chiva Falls TH down to the Tanque Verde Falls TH's was the best area we found. Great views from this area. Rincons' to the south, Mt Lemmon and the Santa Catalinas' to the north, with the Tucson valley laid out to the west. We saw some traffic on the way up, and saw a ton of people at the falls area.
A little toasty out, but there was a nice breeze out. And, like our home in Mesa lately, tons of flies and skeeters buzzing. All of these rains have awoken every bug in the state. Looking at my poor truck after we got back, I think I put an Orkin Man out of a job, as I am sure I killed every bug between here and Marana.
Time to get in a real hike, but trips like this are nice too. |
