After a few days of trying to get out and hike a sunset, I was finally able to manage one. Work has been crazy lately (that's a good thing). In spite of the hazy skies, I set off for Usery MRP to hike up the Wind Cave Trail and Pass Mountain for a sunset.

A few cars in the TH lot when I arrived and it was still a little toasty out, 101 according to Yahoo Weather. The hike up is the same as always. I like this trail, it's easy to follow and has some nice views. I passed up 3 groups/hikers going down and had the place to myself when I made it to the base of the Wind Cave.

I opted to explore a little off-trail for this one. There's a spot right at the base of the cave, before you hike up the last little bit, that offers a path up. I have been down that route coming from Pass Mountain, so I decided to go up. It starts as the extension of the ledge of the cave and then goes up further. Nice views up here and some interesting "subjects" for sure.

The sunset was very subtle as the sun basically transformed into an orange/yellow disk about 10 minutes prior to slipping below the horizon. The sunstars were also crazy as the haze filtered quite a bit of the light.

I waited for the day to end, and started down. An uneventful hike down until I got near the end and I almost (within an inch or two) stepped on a baby rattlesnake. He/she was not too happy about that. So, I let it slither off and finished up.

The cooler days are coming and this place will revert to the typical madhouse. I enjoy this trail when it's like this - mostly empty.
