South of the Smoky Mountains and east of Tellico Plains TN lies the Citico Creek Wilderness. It holds a number of streams including it's namesake Citico creek, South and North. On the drive in from the TN side you'll cruise on the Cherohala Skyway almost to the NC border before exiting to the north toward Indian Boundary lake. On the south side lies the vast Tellico River and many more adventures. The gravel road drops into Citico Creek campground #14. There are 13 other dispersed free campsites along the creek, as well as a couple of pay spots too. Some spots have room for multiple groups while a few are single. The creek is stocked during the summer months with rainbow trout, but stockings are over and what "Ida" didn't wash downstream, the labor day crowds surely caught. Still, there are some trails here worth hiking. Both North and South Citico creek have trails that follow them for many miles into the backcountry, then you can connect on another trail to loop it out. Both have numerous campsites within the first few miles and I'm told many more beyond that. I hiked and fished both for hours and only saw one other person fishing, on a Saturday... If you want the feel of the Smokies without any of the crowds, and free camping, this is a nice choice. Not as spectacular as the park, but really nice and quiet. Following the road downstream past the other free campsites, Citico creek eventually bottoms out and gets swampy before emptying into the Little Tennessee river.
You aren't late if you don't show up!
