I usually hit up WCC every April, right as stockings begin. I rolled in Friday afternoon and checked out the lower area by the 260 bridge. Lots of folks parked, playing guitar, and just sitting in lawn chairs along the creek, but nobody fishing. The water is high and murky, I would be surprised if they had stocked.
The bullpen road is pretty good, all the way to the locked gate at the cattle guard. Uh oh... Oh well no problem on the mountain bike. At least I won't be battling any cars during my hike-a-biking. As I rolled into bullpen, whoa! It is destroyed. The road to the parking lot is a creek now with several pools over 3 foot deep. Deep sand, huge rocks, mud, and fence parts all over, a terrible mess. The actual parking area is completely not accessible, half is part of a flowing creek. I pushed my bike through and rode on to the wilderness boundary sign. Saw a guy fly fishing, he said the first crossing was chest deep, so that's a no go today. We chatted a bit before I headed back to the parking lot, I mean creek bed.
I didn't feel like pedaling and HAB back out, so I went ahead and camped in an obscure part of the parking lot. I know you're not supposed to camp in the parking lot, but since no one can park there, I figured I could camp there. This area will be closed a long time I'm guessing. I filtered some water from the road, gathered some firewood, and settled in for a quiet night. I was packed up and headed out by 7:30AM, drove over to Tonto creek and caught over a dozen trout. They are stocking Tonto heavily above HWY 260.
