To get to the trailhead, take CA 76 west from the junction with CA 79. Go 4 miles past Lake Henshaw to San Diego County S7 (East Grade to Palomar Mt.). Go to milepost 3.4 and the trailhead will be a pullout on the left side of the road.
There is a gate at the trailhead. Walk around the gate to the left through the entrance. The trail is an old forest road that winds gradually downhill. Lots of oak trees and some sotols and similar type bushes along the way. You'll get great views of Lake Henshaw below along with surrounding mountains. At .82 you'll come to a meadow where the road forks. Either road will lead you through the meadow in Love Valley. I took the left fork and it meandered around the meadow. At the 2 mile mark I came to a fence line and the road mostly ended. I'm thinking you could continue across the meadow and return to the forest road, but I chose to retrace my footsteps on the original route.
October temps were in the high 40s when I started, with clear weather. By the time I returned to the trailhead, it was in the high 50s and I was ready to get rid of my jacket and jogging pants.
Suggestions for post-hike activities: wine tasting at Menghini and Volcan Mountain Wineries near Julian, or sampling pies at either California Mountain Bakery (in Wynola) or Mom's Pies (in Wynola or Julian). |
