A friend organized a rim to rim hike, down North Kaibab and up Bright Angel. He knew of a group from Orange Theory that were hiking the other direction so we met them at Flagstaff and swapped cars and would swap keys when we passed in the canyon. I got stuck in the minivan ](*,). We camped at the Orderville trailhead off of 89A on the AZT.

I thought it would be easiest to just pack my gear instead of worrying about retrieving it later, especially since it looked like rain and stuff would be packed up wet. It was a nice clear starry night, but it was still raining. Really weird.

We got up way too early but by the time we got gas and found a place to park, it was a bit past six when we started down into the canyon. Unbeknown to us, the weekend we picked is the busiest R2R day of the year. The NK trailhead parking was full and we had to travel a fair distance before finding a place to park. Plus there was a long line to the privy. Ugh. At least it wasn't too cold. I was fine in shorts, long sleeved shirt, and my wind jacket.

We hoped to start at 5 but 6 was nice as there was enough light to not need a headlamp and seeing the sun rise and the San Francisco peaks off in the distance made the late start worth it.

In general, the hike was pretty casual. We stopped at the first rest house, then the pump house, then Cottonwood Camp. Then I detoured to Ribbon Falls. I'd never been and figured it was about time I did. Then at Phantom Ranch, BA campground, Indian Gardens, and then 1.5 mile to go. Finally made it out. It was casual enough but I haven't done 20+ miles for awhile so I was plenty tired at the end.

So the interesting thing is that about 5 different people asked if I was thru hiking the AZT. Some of them were hiking the AZT themselves. I guess that's what happens when I'm carrying essentially the same kit I hiked the PCT with. It led to some nice conversations so that was fun. I won't deny that I sort of wished I was (until the snow and cold came the next several days).
