| no partners | | Yet another trip into one of my favorite places in AZ. I tried to time this visit to the peak of the fall colors, and I guessed “ok” this time around. Lots of leaves on the ground, but also lots of green leaves in some trees (along with tons of yellow and a little orange here and there). Such a warm autumn this year probably delayed some trees from abscission so far, and others are already ready for winter. The ash have mostly dropped their leaves, the sycamore and cottonwoods were a mixed bag. Lots of yellow and few orange showings. Still many with green leaves. The crazy warm and dry weather this fall has probably messed up the abscission a little. Still lots of time to see the colors in here is my guess
A west entrance day trip this time around. The water level was surprisingly high and flowing strong the entire hike, and the weather was very nice. A little chill in the air when we started out, the low 40’s, but that’s warmer than I expected. It seemed to be heading for a warmer afternoon, high 50’s, low 60’s, but a nice blanket of clouds came in about 2pm and put an end to any heat that might have built up.
Most of our group hiked to Horse Camp Canyon and had a little snack and then started back. That made for a nice 12 mile saunter in this incredible place.
Not many critter sightings for me, although a few in our party did see a family of javelina (with little javalinettes in tow). Another saw a solo coati. I saw a grasshopper and some birds, so hardly the parade-o-wildlife I have seen in here before. All of that beautiful scenery more than made up for that shortcoming. You’d think the rangers would get the animals more organized and have them out in the open so we can see them all, yes?? (ha ha) Bobcats here, deer over there, skunks way over there, etc.
My #2 son was able to come this time, #3 had to work. That made it a special hike even without the splendor that is Aravaipa Canyon.
A great day, with good company and perfect weather in a beautiful location. |
