| no partners | | My 4th venture into this magical area. First time as a solo hiker. I wanted to get a permit from the west entrance, but there’s always slim pickins’ on the permit page. So, east entrance it was.
I arrived about 9am and started off. I could tell on the way in that most of the trees have not yet started their spring transformation. That took away from of the beauty of the hike, but even with bare trees, this place is spectacular.
The water level was similar to the other visits I have enjoyed. The temperature at the start was in the 40’s, but it warmed up nicely into the 60’s.
I came across the first humans east of Deer Creek. I came across 3 other parties, all going out, except for one group of young folks that had camped by Booger Canyon.
I checked each side canyon to see if any water was running, but I figured with the utter lack of rain over the past year, that would be be happening. The hikers I met near Booger Canyon said there were pools up there, but no flow.
My goal was to reach Horse Camp and then turn around. That would make a nice 14-mile hike. That’s exactly what I did.
I saw only a few critter this time around. I came across a couple groups of deer, but they failed to stop and pose for me and ran off. I did see an eagle, or at least I thought was an eagle. It seemed too big to be a hawk, but it was all brown. An adolescence Bald Eagle, perhaps??
The shadows started in on the way back and the air became a little cooler.
An excellent day in an amazing place. I will be back for sure. Next time, I will actually camp out rather than do day hikes like I have in the past. |
