| no partners | | The recent rains prompted me to seek some running water somewhere. Most of the falls in the Supes would be crazy, so I opted for a drop down into First Water Canyon.
I tried my "upper" route going down this time and it worked well. I also came back up the same way.
I wasn't sure if the water would be running, but I was very happy to hear water running after a few minutes of hiking down. I almost went out on Jan 1 to visit this cool canyon, and I am glad I waited. I think this would have been a different hike if I showed up 24 hours earlier. Signs of much higher water levels abounded. It was steady and nice flow the entire length I was on.
A couple of hikers were going down the same time I was. And, I met some other groups while I was hiking. I usually have this place to myself during the dry times. All of the people I met have been down here many times and we all agreed it's a really amazing place.
I started out trying to avoid stepping in the water, but by the time I climbed out, my boots and pants were soaked. I waded a little past the first falls area. When I got to the narrow slot, the water level would have been up to my chest. I started wading in a little and decided I had gone in far enough. The last time I hiked to that point, it was a stagnant and smelly pool. I, of course, hiked through that. I would take the chest high icy water any day.
I turned around and hiked to the confluence of the creek with Canyon Lake. I almost got a new dog, as a cool husky dog decided to follow me out part of the way. He eventually turned back when his family started yelling at him...ha ha
I hiked back out on the same upper path. The chilly start ended with pleasant sunny weather on the way out. I spent a good amount of time in the canyon. I brought a tripod and three lens. So, I took way too many pictures. But, it was an awesome visit. A good first hike of 2022! |
