I started from the very first parking lot on the left side just as you turn in from 88. Saw a dead coyote in the wash there, which I wasn’t sure was dead until I got up on top of it. The trail starts to parallel First Water Road as it gains a little elevation from the road at first, which gives some pretty nice views of Superstition Mountain.
I veered to the west a bit and made a loop hiking north along 88 up to where I had hiked near the Needle Vista lot and then back to First Water Road, making another little loop along the way to finish up a section of trail without doing an out and back.
Once I got back to the road, I hiked on the trail just across the road, hiking in toward LDSP for almost a mile before turning around as the heat started to kick in. When I got back to my car an older man had also just finished up hiking and started talking with me. Turns out he was visiting from Florida and was in town for work for another week and people had told him to check out Superstition Mountain. We talked a bit and I gave him general advice on being careful in the heat, how you don’t have to worry about rattlesnakes when it’s this hot as long as you don’t try to mess them, etc. Seeing someone out of state hiking in the heat like I was reminded me how lucky we are to have scenery like this so close that we tend to take for granted after living here for so long. |
