I've lived in AZ since 1999 and never been to Butcher Jones Rec area, seen Saguaro Lake or even been on the Bush Highway. Time to rectify all of that.

I was the third car in the lot and started to a brisk, clear, calm morning. The sunlight lit up the surrounding cliff faces. The Butcher Jones Trail really is a gem with 1st class views. IMO best done early to take advantage of the morning light, shadows and reduced headcount. I checked out all of the little spurs, to get the different views of the lake. I didn't see any of the trash that others had talked about.

It's real easy to tell where the official trail ends and the use trail begins. After this point a GPS track and long pants would be helpful, but you are still gonna get scratched. It would be nice if they cleared this and turned this into a loop.

My next goal was to find my way around the North Shore checking out the fingers, beaches and coves.

On one of the beaches, there was a fire still smoldering, 50 feet from the lake... really. I pulled out the warm pieces and put them out in the mud. Everyone of the beaches was complete with assorted trash. I guess it's too hard to drive that stuff out.

There is a bit of up and down sticking close to the shore. When it made sense , I used some of the ORV roads to make my way to my lunch and turnaround spot at Hidden Cove. This is directly across from the Bagley Flat Rec Area.

I was sorta surprised, that on a nice weather Saturday, I only saw about 5 groups of ORV's in The Rolls.

I took a slightly different route on the way back to complete the loop. Back on the short section of the the BJT, the afternoon crowds appeared. The Butcher Jones Trail proper, would be a great close to town hike to take out of town guests to.
