| partners | | Chris invited me on this one and I am glad I accepted. I have read triplogs and spoken with others that have done this hike, and I was expecting a sandy slog, hiking in washes all day. But, I was pleasantly surprised.
A dark and chilly (for PHX) start, we made good time to the oven and stopped to have a look. This portion of the hike was a little blah, but the further you hike up, the better the scenery gets. The sand was not too bad to hike on.
Once we turned the corner and started heading towards the lake, things really got nice. Chris had mapped and plotted a couple of extra segments on top of the offical hike and it was really nice to explore an area I have never been to. I have found a new sunrise location with a great view of the lake, mountains and the eastern horizon.
Once we explored the other trails, we started back on the loop and down to the Bush Highway. We met a couple of lady riders near the road. There was many, many hoof prints (and other "reminders" of horse activity) along all of these trails. The culverts under the road are bigger than I expected. The hike back along the Bush Hwy was the low-light of the hike, but a necessary part of the loop.
The weather turned very pleasant at the end. A nice hike in a cool area. I need to figure out how to get up to the view areas from the highway without getting towed now. |
