| no partners | | This is a really good workout hike, and the views along the National Trail are always great. Did this 3 years ago and missed the turnoff for Goat Hill. This time I spotted it and summitted Goat Hill. The views are best to the west mostly as the Estrellas are pretty prominent.
Got started before dawn, just enough daylight to not need a headlamp. Did the loop counter-clockwise, up Pyramid first thing. At the top the winds picked up and it was almost chilly for a few miles. The general traffic in this area has picked up even from 3 years ago, and it was busier then than 9 years before that. Saw several hikers, a few bikers and fewer trail runners, 2 of which were only hiking when I saw them for some reason.
The push up Bursera on the last 2 miles is some work. Felt very tired at first, then kind of hit my groove and pushed through, taking my time but kept moving. Saw a few spur trails along the National at the top where Lost Ranch and Bees Knees connects, as well as a few faded trails that looked like they went to some minor summits along the way. Looks like something to explore for another day.
Temps stayed cool all day thankfully with the elevation gain on this one. Sunny skies the whole time wasn't what I expected earlier in the week when the forecast had a good chance of rain. |
