| no partners | | | Thunderstorms had caused me to cancel my evening hikes several days in a row, resulting in mediocre bike rides and irritable hiker withdrawal. Today would be the welcome return to hiking, or so I thought. As I was driving into Catalina State Park I could see dark clouds peeking over Pusch Ridge. At the trailhead, the clouds were now towering, and rumbles of thunder greeted me. Damn. Thunderstorms win again! Figured I’d hike up the trail for a bit anyway, and watch the amazing cloud show and approaching storm for a few. It didn’t disappoint. A shelf cloud was forming below the stormfront on the mountain crest, and the sinking sun cast warm hues on the ragged clouds. Photo time! Wishing I’d brought my DSLR, which I never do anymore, I tried capturing the approaching lightning using burst mode on my iPhone. Had to delete 2000 photos afterward, but I got a few good captures. Made a quick retreat as lightning was getting closer. Watched the storm from the entrance lot along with a group of other storm enthusiasts as bolts began hitting the Table Mountain area. Another hike cancelled by thunderstorms, but I had an exciting evening at least. |
