I had originally planned this hike for next week, but since today was rainy, I opted for this one since I knew the road and trail would be fine in not so great weather.

Got started just before 0800 to light rain, but with minimal breeze and temps around fifty, it felt nice. The trail heads uphill right away, and is an unrelenting 1600’ gain over the next two miles. Muddy, but in good shape. The rain stayed mostly light on our way uphill. Once we reached the ridgeline, it was a little breezy, but not bad.

Took a right onto the spur trail and headed over to Blacktail mountain first. Easy walk along the ridge to the summit, which had no views today due to the rain and fog. Ordinarily, this summit has great views to the east and west, but I knew today wouldn’t have that. Still a nice summit though. There were a few patches of snow left on the ridge, but they’ll be gone soon.

Once back on the main trail, we continued along the ridge over to Butler Mountain. Butler is not much beyond a bump to the left of the trail in a meadow. Views are limited to the meadow, but it’s an easy walk to Butler once you are on the ridge, so it’s worth doing if you want a peak.

We retraced our steps back down to the trailhead, making sure not to slip on the muddy trail. Footing was generally okay, but having a pole helped. The rain tapered off about a half mile from the end, but started again as we finished.

This was a good choice for today’s weather. Saw two turkeys, but nothing else. Zero other people, although there were five other vehicles at the trailhead; they were likely on Maiden Rock trail, which has the same starting point.

Continuous flowers along the entire trail. Will likely be a good showing in a few weeks.
