I went to the Navajo Nation to hike to Pastora Peak (elevation of 9,407 feet and prominence of 2,687 feet). We had purchased Navajo Nation backcountry permits, so we were legal.

This is not a trivial hike, at least from where we started. The most challenging part was the drive in to where we parked. I have now done 57 AZ P2K peaks, and this is easily the worst road of the bunch. The road is really rocky with lots of ruts and gullies -- a high clearance 4WD vehicle is needed along with careful tire placement.

We drove in about 8 miles from pavement and decided to call it good and park and start hiking. I could have continued further, but the drive was really slow going, and I came out there to hike instead of going 4 wheeling. With patience and perseverance you could drive with 1/2 mile or so of the summit if you wanted to.

The hike was mostly on a road through some scenic open country. The first couple of miles reminded me of hiking on FR27 up to Mount Ord -- a rocky road with a constant grade of about 500 feet per mile. After 2 1/2 or 3 miles, the grade flattened out for a couple of miles, and was a pleasant walk. We left the road at the base of the peak, and made a fairly easy off trail ascent of about 300 feet or so of vertical gain. There were a good many trees at the summit so views were limited. Fortunately there were some nice vistas along the hike.

I enjoyed this hike, but given the condition of the road I am not likely to repeat the hike.

Autumn Foliage Observation Light
There were some aspens and oaks with fall color, but this is not an area known for lots of fall foliage. In other words, there are much better places to go for fall foliage.

I saw some Indian paintbrush and some lupine, but there wasn't much of either.
