I believe that there are 9 different Brushy Mountains in New Mexico. This particular Brushy Mountain has an elevation of 7,600 feet and prominence of 2,280 feet. It is easily recognized by a large FAA geodesic radome (short for radar domw) that is on top of the mountain. The radome looks like a giant golf ball or ea giant egg, and it can be seen for miles around.
The drive in was about 15 miles on a dirt road. The road is well graded and a 4WD vehicle is not necessary to make the drive. I went ahead and used 4WD on the drive since it is better on your tires and better on the road to do so.
I knew there was a gate not far below the summit, and I had planned to park at the gate and walk the rest of the way. However, the gate was open and I took that as an invitation to drive on up, so I did.
I parked next to the radome, walked over to the obvious highpoint, walked around and took a few pictures, and then left. |
