A couple of things make Lincoln County noteworthy:
1) In terms of area, it is the 7th largest county in the continental U.S. However, in spite of its large area, Lincoln County only has about 5,200 residents.
2) Lincoln County is home to the Area 51 Air Force base. So in addition to the usual hiking perils, this hike also has much higher than normal alien abduction risk!
I did this hike from Mill Canyon. I drove in a couple of miles from Highway 93 and parked at the Mount Grafton Wilderness boundary.
The first couple of miles were on a road, and then there was about 3/4 mile of bushwhacking through Mill Canyon. It wasn't really brushy, but there were some thick trees and a good bit of deadfall to go over, under, around, and through. It wasn't the worst that I have ever gone through, but it wasn't all that great either.
Once out of the forest, it was a very steep ascent up to a ridgeline not far below the county highpoint. This ascent was open, as there were very few trees and no vegetation higher than knee high. It was really steep though -- gaining about 2,200 feet in 1.5 miles. I didn't think that it would ever end. I finally got to a ridgeline that was south of the county line, just below Peak 10,802. I did not have to go too far on the ridgeline to get to a cairn that marked the Lincoln County highpoint. I walked around a bit to make sure that I tagged the highpoint, and then returned the way that I came.
Synopsis
This one won't make my top 10 list of favorite hikes. Now I see why many people doing the Nevada county highpoints save this one for last. |
