| partners | | Yesterday's surprising long-duration rain event persuaded me to avoid a hiking plan (ok, honestly, I wanted to watch the USAoranje game and not have anything planned after it, but the weather made the choice a good one, despite the sportsing outcome). Since sportsball or politics aren't the prism through which I see everything else in my life, I skipped today's England and France games for an adventure you can't get emotionally dragged into on the internet. One could make the argument that this hike can be done once a year, while the sports thing occurs only every four years ... but whatever! I did this one for the first time this spring and decided I really wanted to return to capture seasonal things this fall.
The rain yesterday had me a little concerned that it would be tough to do (perhaps even impossible). On the drive in, the Tortilla crossing was flowing far more than I expected. As was Mesquite. We resigned ourselves to a day of deep and chilly wading, so after enjoying all the waterfalls on the walk down the hill we were pleasantly surprised to find that Fish was flowing pleasantly, but not nearly as high as the other two.
It made for a very enjoyable dayventure. The rain had mostly stopped, though we had a good shower along the way. Waterfalls were flowing from a number of side drainages and clouds made for many dramatic scenes. Ryan and I left Joel to do professional photography things somewhere along the way. After the the climb and shuttle back to the start, I found a beverage donated to my windshield from somebody who recognized my truck sometime during the day. It's funny, but for an area with several million residents, the ones who do the things I like to do is pretty small, and we often know each other.
In winter darkness we stopped at Tortilla Flat as there were only a couple of other cars there ... the first time I'd ever risked this normally obnoxious tourist trap ... and enjoyed a surprisingly tasty burger before calling it a day. Too bad it's usually a feces show. Thankful however, that 99% are happy with the burger stop and nothing beyond it. |
