| partners | | Was gonna do this one today, but bomb cyclone predictions and airline scheduling made me switch my trip back east a day early and that necessitated hitting this one yesterday instead.
We got started at a delightfully relaxed noon-thirty after I got all my morning chores done at home. We drove in from the north, and the wash/road was sandy and featured a bunch of in n outs. A careful sedan can probably still do it, but it wouldn't be too enjoyable.
NGL, I forgot what a beast this hike is. Temps were delightfully in the 50s but it's just a relentlessly steep climb that only gets steeper! I had done the time math from previous trips and we were falling woefully behind the plan. Even with my previous routes loaded, a couple of times we angled up a wrong drainage for a short stretch before correcting back. It ended up taking 3hrs to summit.
My plan to also bag the spectacularly rugged 4232 next door was thwarted by daylight and I was properly excoriated by Matt for my failure. The direct-return took less time than the climb, but it's no walk in the park either. The lower mile always seems to last forever.
Back at the truck we enjoyed a celebratory beverage as the sun set to the west and annoyed with the drive in, I opted for the "easier" exit to the south. Previously I've thought the south route is a better option, but with current conditions, I can't say that at all. Besides west-side traffic which is nice to avoid, the actual dirt drive is easier, in better shape, and quicker from the north. But this allowed us to grab dinner in Maricopa which you should do ... once.
I still love this hike, but hopefully next time I'll remind myself ahead of time what a beast of a day it is. |
