Walker Canyon is a good jump off point for Pajarito Peak because there is a road or decent path to the CCC tank.
-
Leave rte 39 at walker canyon and go past the farm.
There are two intersections, keep to the left for each one.
At the 1.55 mile mark there is a good place to park off the road and not catch anything on fire.
Right across the road to the West is a very steep narrow ridge that runs to the SW. There is an animal path that runs right across the top. I didn’t realize how narrow until I got up there though. One step off the trail puts you over either edge.
-
The ridge to the north has a road but I’ve been on it before, and I wanted to go this way to drop down into the canyon and check out some cliffs.
This turned out to be a problem because I ended up on top of the cliffs.
-
I got within about 30 feet of the canyon floor and had to scale and slide some. The canyon had some shade here and there because it was so narrow. Not Aztec Canyon narrow but still dramatic.
-
Really fast going because there wasn’t much brush. Headed back all the way in the canyon to the truck and decided to check out a road to a rock column I found a few years ago.
-
I found it when I hiked to Mud Tank though Calabasas Campground and saw it in the distance from some cliffs.
It’s about .25 miles SE from the truck and there is a faint trail.
-
Faster than normal pace today because I wanted to beat the heat. |
