C and I were out this way last weekend and I noticed what looked like some old mining activity way up on the side of the mtn.
Woke up really sore from hiking the day before so I thought it would be a good idea take a hike today and work the soreness out. (It’s the thought that counts?)
I got this bright idea to patch a place in the road that got washed out with some concrete and blocks someone dumped at the bottom of the mtn. Exit 29 seems to be a dump for construction waste. IF you go this way to Corral Ranch Road and beyond then be aware that where you cross Gasline Road there is a really back washout that you cant see until you slam into it. You can see it coming out but not as you go over the knuckle across Gasline road.
I loaded up about 30 pavers and concrete and tried to fill it in. Might go back and put up a makeshift warning sign…. For some yahoos to run over or knock down?
No really. The first time I hit this thing it knocked my fillings loose.
8:43 Parked where FR 4876 Splits off from FR4145.
8:53 reached the turn around and crossed the creek and headed up the hill.
8:57 – first mining area. Literally on the side of some cliffs. It looked like it might lead to the top.
9:05 – Creepy canyon behind cliffs
9:12 – warning signage and blobby rocks
9:27 back canyon via mine “road”
9:29 – found a rock wall with a 50 gallon drum hidden under a ledge
Spotted what I hoped would be a road up to the saddle to the other side of the canyon.
Turned in to a trail but I headed to the saddle even after the trail disappeared.
9:52 found another white pipe.
10:01 headed down
10:08 – fell down bad
10:26 back at the turn around
10:52 back at the truck
Walked to the turn around campfire area then headed across the creek and straight up the hill. Sheesh louise. Even though its pretty grippy ground with some big rocks to grab onto its just one of those hillsides that you don’t recover from if you fall.
Way up on the hillside there were some cliffs and from a hike a week ago it looked like some mining had gone on there too.
It didn’t take long to get to the top of the cliffs and it had a weird vibe. Behind the cliffs there was a cut that looked like a small canyon. I followed this for about 100 yards and found a mine warning sign and a “road” . I guess I went up the short way.
The road petered out near the bottom.
The satellite view shows a faint road on the other side of the canyon that leads to a lower and higher saddle. I followed this till I came to a white pipe sticking out of the rocks.

At the second saddle I thought I saw a very faint path that led down to the creek. After coming to the edge of some cliffs twice I decided to go f or broke and keep trying to find a way. Again, it looked like an area where something with a track may have gone down and given up and back up.
This is where I fell.
I’m not even sure what happened and I cant make a joke about this one.
Didn’t get knocked out but it felt like my head cracked open.
Right away I knew that my glasses were gone but I carry a spare pair in my pack.
Sat there a while and got my bearings before looking for my glasses and walking stick.
Tried to take a pic of the side of my head. Pretty good cut.
The distance from where I dropped my stick and where I ended up was between 30 and 40 feet.
When I got home I found another cut and lump.
Today I feel every place that I landed on.
A razor will make it to the turn around. When I go back and check out some other features I plan to take the truck another 50 yards up the road to a wide spot. But not all the way to the turn around.
My head is still swollen in two places and very tender.
I’ll spare the pics on here.
(I'll come back later and fix the typos) |
