Planned a different hike all week and at the last minute plans changed.
This one was harder, steeper and mean. The kind of mean that only a red headed step child knows.
The climb to the peak was on all fours many times.
at about the 3/4 way up a few side by sides came to the end of the road and watched me until I disappeared over the top.
Half way across the top I was over heating so I dropped over the ridge on the North side and sat in the shade till I felt chilly.
The ride is very narrow in places. On step to the left or right puts you in a bad place fast.
As I looked down on the saddle where the cairn was I decided to just head back on the route I came up about 5 years ago.
From the saddle it looked like there was a lot of solid bare rock headed toward bee rock so I decided to keep going. I mean at that point I was probably only a mile into this mess.
It really was a pretty gently slope upward.
I needed the chill of the North side of the rock in the shade. Made two failed attempts at getting to the top through some cracks and ledges.
Last try I ended up losing my balance and fell backward over small ledge. Backpack kept my head from hitting.
Hung out at the top for a couple of minutes and headed down.
I am so grateful for finding a window. It’s more like a small grotto.
Kept expecting to cliff out on the way down but managed to skirt around difficult places.

Parked in the trees and took a nap for and hour or so then just. Hung out where there is no cell reception or noise.
Got home after dark and zonked out pretty fast.

Quiet day.

No trash today anywhere. Quiet.

First Peak 4593
Starting Elevation 3871
Initial Gain 722

Exit 29 on I-19
Head west and where the road dips down into Rock Corral Canyon bear to the right and keep going.
The road ends at a pretty small turnaround loop. I have to go ¾ of the way around it and then reverse to get a better angle. And it takes 4wd to reverse because its steep.
This time I parked to the side of the turn around and headed West.
Made a Bee line to the peak.
It is insanely steep and rugged. There are lots of ledges and rocks and boulders to climb over to reach the top. I believe the elevation gain is over 700 feet.
11:56 – left the truck
12:07 got to the steep part and rested in the last of the shade for a while.
12:43 reached the top.
47 minutes seems like a long time for such a short distance but it is steep and the rocks are unpredictable.
1:29 put me across the very, very narrow ridge to the saddle where I found a cairn about 3 feet tall.
1:52 saddle to South of Bee cave rock
2:00 took a rest in the shade on the North side of Bee Cave rock
2:26 made it to the top of Bee Cave rock after two unsuccessful attempts and one backwards fall down a ledge.
3:00 found a small window/grotto. It was big enough to sit inside and enjoy some shade. There was a tunnel that ran to one side. Very nice perch and I continued through this and zig zagged more until I got in the wash about 200 yards before the mine.
3:35 left the mine
3:55 back at the truck – usually take 15 minutes
By the time I got started it was almost 70 degrees.
Took half a gallon of water and used almost all of it
