While planning for todays trip I saw a faint “road” to the East of where I stopped. This road made a pretty straight shot down into the canyon but took several switchbacks to get up to the mine. This road ended at the top of the ridge looking down into the canyon. It looked like someone had driven that far but not into the canyon.
3.57 miles round trip. AEG = about 900 feet.
The mine shaft was vertical and about 3 feet in diameter. It was surrounded by a fence and I didn’t risk crossing it.
It was right at one mile from the truck to the road and there weren’t even any game trails to follow to that point. From the road to the mine was .75 miles.
I came back pretty much the same as the way in but managed to stay the same elevation as the last ridge. Water in the canyon was covered in a thin layer of ice. Stopped twice for a good break.
Most of the hike was miserable. Rolling rocks and nary a flat place the whole time. catclaw every step of the way. Evil vindictive stuff. Loved every minute of it.
Next weekend will be Thumb Butte. |
