About 80% of the trail is fairly easy to follow, the other 20% varies between somewhat vague, and a cairn hunt. At least a dozen downed trees to negotiate, and very brushy along the trail—all of which was thorny. Millions of grasshoppers and cicadas were on the trail, more than I think I’ve ever encountered. Anyone who knows Wyatt knows he does NOT like grasshoppers.
Just last week, I got Harlow rattlesnake trained, which was a fun process. The trainer let me help since I was not afraid of the muzzled rattlers—it was quite weird to be physically handling rattlers with full venom and nothing but a little muzzle over their heads, but I had fun. Today, we encountered an angry Arizona Black. I stepped right next to it and it let out a tiny buzz. I jumped forward and Harlow froze and stepped back (she was on the leash behind me which Reagan was holding), while neither kid heard the buzz. It was too close to the trail for them to safely pass, so I found a stick and nudged it farther off to the side.
Once past the snake, we made our way up to the summit where the kids eagerly looked for the ladybugs I had promised would be there. After that, we had a break and a snack on the stone furniture. While I was visiting the girls room behind a tree, a large swarm of bees flew over, and while the kids did not like that, they did think it was funny I got caught with my pants down at that very moment.
While a mile longer, we opted to walk the road back to the truck. Easy walking, all downhill, no brush, deadfall, or snakes. Pleasant way to finish out the hike. Stopped at the Burger House in Miami so the kids could get a late lunch.
Tried out a new Eddie Bauer sun hoodie. It’s almost as light and breathable as my usual Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake, a little more flowy, and has a sewn in ponytail opening in the hood. Same price, but I got it for 50% off this week, so it was a good buy. |
