Sunflowers are starting to pop for large stretches up north along I-17. We passed a few mtn bikers after turning up to Snowbowl, which seemed more resemblent of Mount Lemmon.
The hike up was nice weather at a pleasant pace. The undesirable roots were expected. Medium-sized rocks for miles seemed more prevalent. They are stable for the most part and fun to skip and jump across. I don't recall the powder-soft North Kaibab-type layer of dust. You just get filthy dirty. It's not the nasty mule-infused excreta.
A rare lucky summer day with only a 20% chance of rain and a light breeze nearing the saddle. The saddle to the summit was fab. It only got semi-windy at the peak. 20 seconds after sitting down a swarm of noseeums joined me like I was a juicy filet. They didn't bite or attack my sandwich so it was a minor nuisance.
Small patches of snow still lightly dot the sides of the mountain.
We didn't see many people all day. Then the final mile was loaded with a logo-less youth camp of sorts begging for trouble. Little water and seemingly unsupervised with a 1-2 pm start. They were thinking they were halfway at that point so it's doubtful they went past the saddle if even halfway up. Lee did not 100% approve of a gal blasting the Black Eyed Peas cuz he's firmly en route to 50 years old.
Good to hike with Linda and Lee in a smaller group and hear stories from the Idaho twins! |
