| no partners | | Back in the Galiuros. From the water tanks off the Ash Creek trail I entered the canyon. It was 24 degrees leaving the Yota; and it was not an early enough start for me. I had a hard time staying on the old trail; I found a few more degenerate tree blazes. Heavy bushwaking on parts of the old trail, hell if I was off it. Like yards per hour hell. The canyon is full of maples and the tree litter made it a little harder to track. Very interesting cliff erosion that was hard to photograph with all the vegetation. Crawling over and under trees and brush, tangling in grapevines.
Leaving the bottom suddenly the vegetation cleared, I walked a trailess area out to a point. Bassett was in front of me. From the mapping of the old trail it should be only 2.3 miles to the end of the ridgeline below Bassett and about 1800 gain. I noted what appeared to be a very clear steep switchback leaving the bottom opposite from where I was then what appeared to be a level trail cut on the opposite side, dropping slightly to meet the rise of the canyon bottom.
I was worn out and had lost my hat and fallen several times and with the short days wasn't sure I could make it to Bassett to come down the main trail. I know, what a wimp. It is what it is. I would like to return with longer daylight. I wonder why this trail was decommissioned. With some maintenance it could be very nice with some great views in it's own right. |
