Drove in on the good then bad then "really" road to finally camp near my goal. A derelict road which would take me to Cherry Creek. There are not many brush free access points on the middle part of the creek. One nasty spot on the road had the Jeep doing a bit of a nose stand then I tiptoed it thru the boulders.
I decided to walk the road as it was short and why torture the Jeep for just an in and out. Good decision as not too far the wash runoff had destroyed the road crossing and cut the bank out from under the opposite side.
Where it reached Cherry creek was an idyllic camp area for sure. The creek was running strong and I made my way downstream, enjoyed the sandy banks and some streamside meadow like areas. Nice cliffs in the area. No cows were seen. I was just wandering as I had been downstream and some upstream of here. I came to an incredible area of slickrock with running water and pools and fringed by magnificent hoodoos. The area was open not narrow but all I could think of was what an incredible place and when can I camp here.
Soon some white rock with the water entrenched with swimming pools easily walked around on a cow trail. Coming back to get some photos took a spicier route; thinking well I've paid my medicare and supplemental insurance, I should be ok.
Getting warm, the water wonderfully cool to get into. I wandered back, thinking about how I would put a backpack together, with possibly a road walk back. With the lack of maintenance the Cherry Creek road is suffering some marked erosion that could create problems in the future even for ATV's.
Driving out had to use lo and lockers at the spot where the wash had taken the road and now you have boulders and a steep embankment. Probably overkill but I've seen what happens when people try to power thru; usually a broken axle, a blown up u-joint or a bent tie rod. I had to back up on a big boulder to get the line and the Jeep walked up it no problem.
Big clouds building and in the distance I could see the smoke from the Valentine Fire. Hope we get just a little more rain soon.
