| no partners | | A quick overnight in a canyon I like and wanted to have more time to do photography. I was an idiot in that I forgot two fairly important pieces of gear to me but I decided to go anyway. Also the off trail route I had forgotten with a large pack is a bit tedious as it drops off a cliff to get into the canyon. A place or two and a slip will be probably fatal with all the jagged rocks awaiting you.
Got to the bottom and set up in a mesquite bosque. Got in some later light wandering, disappointed that the cottonwoods in this area were green but the sycamores looked good. Running water; I wasn't quite sure there would be.
Cold night. Early am a gentle owl call, every 15 min or so. Then some owl got a megaphone and HOOT,HOOT, my gosh I was then wide awake. I decided to have some hot chocolate. HOOT, HOOT, HOOT. Ok, I'll read some. Back to sleep then very weird feeling that someone laid down beside me with their back against mine. Probably some owl entity.
Next day daypack and running around, found some gold in them there trees, a dam with a good flow that was not on my TOPO map, and a large group of javelina. There are no campsites in this canyon, it's not easy to get in this end of it and I saw no one. I am considering returning to get into another area with more cottonwood potential, more off trailing as usual. |
